The purpose of vibratory finishing is removing burrs, oxidation, or producing a desired surface finish. Many times these parts are processed directly after the previous operation, still coated with a lubricant or manufacturing soil of some kind. In order for the finishing process to operate effectively, keeping the media clean and parts lubricated is necessary.

Mass finishing compounds, sometimes called vibratory soaps, remove processing soils from the parts and keep them from depositing on the media. Keeping parts and media clean prevent parts from sticking together, and in the case of ceramic media, keeps the pores of the media open, allowing them to remain abrasive.

After the abrasion and removal of surface oxides, the substrate of the treated parts is now very active, so to prevent flash corrosion on these parts, metal deactivators and corrosion inhibitors are also incorporated.
