When preparing substrates for topcoat, it’s just as important what you do or don’t take off, as what residue the cleaner may leave behind. Most pretreatment cleaners on the market today are effective at removing oils and light greases. In the past that was enough. Now that zirconium and other new surface treatment technologies are emerging and taking a place in the market, cleaners need to be effective enough to meet the needs of parts being subjected to these processes as well. When you are seeking the highest corrosion resistance and paint adhesion, part cleanliness prior to coating is critical.

There are plenty of other soils, other than oil, on parts that we normally don’t pay enough attention to. Inorganic contaminants like oxides, embedded materials, and carbonaceous particulate, especially around welded areas, that can interfere with conversion coatings even though the part is “water break-free”.
